Going to the Supermarket
This afternoon I felt much better, so I decided to go out for a walk and also go to the supermarket to buy a few things. The supermarket is not far from my home; it takes ten minutes to walk there. After entering, I took a basket first and then went to the fruit section to take a look.
There were many apples, bananas, and oranges in the fruit section. I wanted to buy some oranges because the doctor said it’s better to eat more fruit when you have a cold. I checked the price sign: oranges were 6 yuan per jin, and apples were 8 yuan per jin. Oranges were cheaper, so I bought two jin.
Then I went to the drinks section and wanted to buy a bottle of water and a carton of milk. But I didn’t know where the milk was, so I asked a staff member, “Excuse me, where is the milk?” The staff member said, “It’s on the right in front. Walk forward and turn left at the second intersection, and you’ll see it.”
I followed what he said and found it quickly. Finally I lined up at the checkout and paid; it was 38 yuan in total. On the way home, I felt going out to buy things was easy, and I also felt it was becoming more and more convenient for me.

Cultural Insights
Asking staff in supermarkets
In many supermarkets, people often ask staff “在哪儿?” when they cannot find an item. Directions inside stores may also use simple turns like “右边、左转,” especially in bigger supermarkets. This is a common everyday interaction and usually feels very normal.
Many learners find supermarkets a good place to practice Chinese because there are clear sections and price signs. Using small questions helps you learn practical words quickly.
Buying fruit while sick
When people feel unwell, they often buy fruit like oranges because they feel it is “healthy.” Even if it is not medicine, it is seen as a simple way to take care of yourself. Talking about price per 斤 is very common in Chinese shopping.
Paying at the checkout usually involves lining up and then hearing the total price. Saying “一共多少钱?” and “一共花了…” are very useful for real shopping situations.
