Return or Exchange?
Yesterday I bought a carton of milk and some fruit at the supermarket. After I got home, I found the date on the milk wasn’t very good—it was about to expire. I felt a bit worried, so I decided to go to the supermarket today to ask whether I could exchange it for a new one.
This morning I brought the milk and the receipt back to the supermarket. At the service desk, I lined up first. When it was my turn, I said to the staff, “Sorry, this milk is about to expire. Can I exchange it?” The staff checked the date and the receipt and said, “Yes. Do you want to exchange or return it?”
I said, “I want to exchange it for one with a better date.” The staff said, “No problem. Go get a new one first, then come back here.” I went to the drinks section, found the milk, carefully checked the date, chose a fresher one, and then returned to the service desk.
The staff helped me exchange it and reminded me to check the date first next time. I said thank you and felt I learned to solve problems more politely. On the way home, I felt reassured and also felt shopping in China was getting smoother and smoother.

Cultural Insights
Checking dates and keeping receipts
When buying food and drinks, many people in China check the 日期 to make sure it is not close to expiration. Keeping the 小票 is important, because shops often ask for it when you want to return or exchange an item. Service desks are the usual place to handle these issues.
Exchanges are often easier than returns for small daily items, especially if the product is unopened. Using polite language helps the process go smoothly.
Polite problem-solving
Starting with “不好意思” is common when you want to ask for help or make a request. Staff may respond with “没问题” to show they can help. This kind of polite exchange is normal and usually quick.
Asking “换货还是退货?” is a standard service question. Learning these fixed phrases can help you handle shopping problems with confidence.
