Weekly Review: Health & Shopping

This week was a bit busy, and I learned a lot of everyday Chinese. On Monday morning after I got up, I didn’t feel well: I had a headache, my throat hurt, and I had a slight fever. My coworker said I looked unwell and told me to go to the hospital first. It took ten minutes to walk there from my home. I registered first and then waited for the doctor. The doctor asked where I felt uncomfortable, whether I had a cough, and also asked me to open my mouth to check my throat.

The doctor said it should be a cold and prescribed medicine, telling me to drink more water after I got home, go to bed early, and not work today. The next day I brought the prescription to a pharmacy. The clerk told me imported medicine was relatively expensive, and the common one was a bit cheaper. I asked how much in total and how to take it: three times a day, two tablets each time, after meals. After I got home, I drank water first, then took the medicine, and rested at home.

While resting, I called my company to ask for leave and messaged friends that I couldn’t go out. I felt the house was a bit messy, so I did some simple tidying and also ordered takeout. After a few days, I felt much better, so I conveniently went to the supermarket to buy some things. I checked the price sign: oranges were 6 yuan per jin, and apples were 8 yuan per jin, so I bought two jin of oranges.

I also bought a carton of milk, but after getting home I found it was about to expire. I brought the milk and the receipt to the service desk, politely said “sorry,” and asked whether I could exchange it. The staff asked if I wanted to exchange or return. I chose to exchange it and got one with a better date. He also reminded me to check the date first next time.

On the weekend the weather was nice, and my friend and I went to the mall to buy clothes. I liked a blue coat, asked whether they had a bigger one, and tried it on in the fitting room. The size was just right but a bit expensive. The clerk said there was a promotion today and I could get 10% off. I felt the price was okay, so I bought the coat. Looking back, from seeing a doctor to shopping, I could handle many things by myself in Chinese this week, and I felt more and more reassured.
