Buying Clothes
This afternoon the weather was very nice, so my friend and I went to the mall to buy clothes. My friend said winter is coming soon, so it’s best to buy a new coat. I don’t usually like shopping, but after thinking about it, I felt I should buy something too.
When we arrived at the mall, we first went to a clothing store. There were many coats and sweaters, and there were many colors too: black, white, blue, and red. I liked a blue coat, but I didn’t know if they had my size, so I asked the clerk, “Excuse me, do you have a bigger one?”
The clerk looked and said, “Yes. Do you want L or XL?” I said, “I want L. Can I try it on?” The clerk said, “Of course. The fitting room is over there.” I took the coat to the fitting room to try it on. I felt the size was just right, but it was a bit expensive.
I asked the clerk, “How much is this coat? Can it be a bit cheaper?” The clerk smiled and said, “There’s a promotion today; you can get 10% off.” I felt the price was okay, so I bought the coat. My friend said it looked good on me, and I felt very happy.

Cultural Insights
Trying on clothes in shops
In many Chinese clothing stores, trying on clothes is normal and free. Staff often tell you where the 试衣间 is. Asking “可以试穿吗?” is polite and common.
Sizes are often labeled with letters like S/M/L/XL, and staff may ask you directly which one you want. Saying “大一点儿” or “小一点儿” helps when you are not sure about sizing.
Discount culture
Promotions are very common in malls, and discounts are often expressed with “打… Many shoppers ask for a better price when something feels expensive. Even if the price cannot change, staff may mention an activity or membership discount.
Compliments like “穿起来很好看” are common between friends when shopping. They help people feel confident about their choice and make the experience more enjoyable.
